Blackmailed, abducted and raped: The harrowing tale of an Assam woman

First Published: 7th August, 2023 16:10 IST

The victim’s ordeal started when accused Ariful Islam took a video of her bathing and started blackmailing her and her family

In a shocking and disturbing incident that highlights the depths of depravity and lack of security of women in Assam, a woman has emerged a survivor after going through a horrifying ordeal involving blackmail, abduction, rape, and molestation.

The victim recounted her ordeal, explaining that the torment began around five months ago when she discovered that a video of her bathing had been surreptitiously captured. The accused Ariful Islam got hold of this intimate footage and began blackmailing her, exploiting her vulnerability and extracting both money and compliance from her family by threatening them that if they did not comply he would make the video public.

As the victim’s family grappled with the ordeal, matters took a sinister turn when Ariful Islam and two accomplices abducted her. The trio held her captive in a secluded area known as the Ghulai Forest, where the victim endured a series of violent and traumatizing events. Over a period of five excruciating days, she was subjected to relentless acts of molestation and rape.

Terrifying threats further intensified the victim’s nightmare, as Ariful Islam threatened her that she would meet a grim fate – she would be killed, her body disposed of in a river stuffed in a bag. The accused even threatened the woman to marry him. The woman somehow succeeded to flee from the clutches of the accused.

But what is shocking is that despite several complaints made, the Thelamara Police reportedly did not take any action, following which she went straight to the Additional SP to report her ordeal.
The case is now in the court.
