The Bharatiya Janata Party has triumphed in a series of elections in Assam, asserting its electoral dominance of the country’s politics as its rival Congress party floundered.

Tasting success from Panchayat elections to Rajya Sabha elections the BJP party now sweeps the Guwahati Municipal elections on Sunday.

In a comprehensive win, the BJP party has won 58 seats in the Guwahati civic polls out of its 60 wards.

Meanwhile, the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have won one seat each.

Since it took power nationally in 2014, the BJP has become a potent electoral force. Its popularity has been helped by a combination of nationalism, identity, delivery of welfare and utilities to the poor and the personal aura of PM Narendra Modi, India’s most powerful prime minister in decades.

The counting of votes for the crucial Guwahati Municipal Corporation elections began from 8 am at the Maniram Dewan Trade Centre.

Notably, the Guwahati Municipal election is held after a nine-year hiatus, with EVMs being used for the first time in all 60 wards under the GMC.

In total, 197 candidates were in the fray in 57 wards, whereas BJP candidates in three wards have already been elected uncontested.

A total of 757 polling stations have been put up for this election, with 80 polling stations being conducted solely by women polling officials.
