Big breakthrough for Assam Police: 52 smuggled Indonesian birds-animals rescued

The operation was carried out near the Assam-Mizoram border under the Bilaipur Police Station.

In a big breakthrough, the Assam Police had busted a smuggling racket involved in dealing with exotic animals and birds.

As per inputs, police in collaboration with the forest department has rescued 52 Indonesian birds and animals including Black Lory, Red & blue Lory, Babirusa Swine and Hornbills from smugglers near the Mizoram border today.

According to the forest officials, 43 among the rescued exotic creatures are Red & Blue Lory birds, 6 Black Lory, 2 Hornbills and one Babirusa (Indonesian swine).

The arrested persons have been identified as Moinuddin Ali and Samsul Haque, both residents of Assam’s Hojai district.

Briefing the media, ASP Shamirdaptar Baruah said, “This morning the Bilaipur Police team during checking in the border area, an SUV (Fortuner) defied signals and ran over a barricade. However, our team managed to intercept the vehicle. After frisking the vehicle the birds and the animals were found. During investigation it was found that they were of Indonesian origin. Further it was learnt that, the smugglers were coming from Indonesia, and entered Mizoram through Myanmar. They were travelling to West Bengal after entering Assam. Investigation into the matter is underway.”
