Assam: Bomb Scare in Guwahati’s City Centre Mall

First Published: 19th August, 2024 20:00 IST

The mall was quickly vacated following a reported threat that authorities initially described as a "technical issue".

There was utter panic and chaos at Guwahati’s City Centre Mall today after a suspected bomb threat led to the sudden evacuation of shoppers and staff from the mall that is located few kilometres away from Dispur with the busy GS Road on one side and the Zoo Road (R G Barua Road) on the other.

The authorities put up a notice outside the mall saying the mall is shut for two hours due to ‘technical issues’.

Sniffer dogs, fire brigade units, and a bomb disposal squad were seen entering the premises shortly after the evacuation.

“We’ve informed the disaster management team, but we have no confirmation of any bomb threat. This is a technical issue, not related to any bomb,” an official of the Mall said.

The mall is one of the busiest malls of Guwahati.

It may be mentioned here that the ULFA-I in a mail on 15 August claimed that explosives had been planted in around 25 locations including Guwahati.

Following this, bomb-like materials had been recovered by Guwahati Police from Satgaon and Last Gate areas of the city on 16 August.
