CM Himanta Biswa Sarma took strong exception of what has happended and directed DGP GP Singh for an appropriate probe into the case.
In a shocking case, a youth from Dergaon in Eastern Assam’s Golaghat district died by suicide after he was allegedly thrashed by police personnel for no fault of his.
The incident reportedly happened on Wednesday amid the Vijaya Dashami festivities at Dergaon’s Kamargaon Doloumukh. Everything came to light when the deceased posted a video on social media alledging the police atrocities which forced him to resort to the harsh step.
In the self-shot video the deceased claimed, “A boy was fighting I went to rescue him, did I do something wrong? The driver, police and traffic personnel hit me, I did not do any crime. I am a hard working, poor man. I am sending this video to everyone, please share it. I was hit in my face, in my belly. I did not do anything. I seek peace after my death.”
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, after coming to know about the incident, has directed the police to initiate all necessary steps and find out the truth.
The Assam Police has taken cognizance of this and has announced an SP-level enquiry into the matter. DGP GP Singh shared a post on X and informed, “Assam Police is deeply distraught at the news of suicide of a young fellow citizen Sri Ajay Dutta of Dergaon, District Golaghat.
Honourable Chief Minister Assam has conveyed to me his grave concern about the incident.
SP Golaghat has been directed to enquire into the matter and fix responsibility for the unfortunate incident and also take lawful action as required by law. While conveying our deepest condolences to the bereaved family, I wish to reassure people of Assam that our efforts would continue to make Assam Police a more sensitive and humane police unit.”
Golaghat SP Rajen Singh soon swung into action after DGP GP Singh’s directive and visited the residence of the deceased and spoke to the family members.
Briefing the media he said, “It is a very sad incident. He is a minor boy and due to unexpected reasons he has died by suicide. DGP has ordered me to probe the matter so that whoever is involved in the incident or whoever is responsible for this are punished. I have already started the investigation. Recording of statements of whoever was present at the spot when the incident took place have begun. I assure that the probe will move in the right direction so that those guilty face action as per law, for that appropriate steps will be taken. We are all hurt by the incident and I convey my condolences to the bereaved family.”
The incident has occured at a time when the government is pushing for more reforms in the police force and make it people friendly. But the Dergaon incident has cast serious doubts if this would be a reality.
