In a shocking incident of moral policing, a youth and his partner were brutally assaulted by a mob in Narsinghpur, in Assam’s Cachar district. The incident took place on Thursday while the nation was celebrating Independence Day, adding to the gravity of the situation.
As per reports, the mob accused the youth of engaging in ‘love jihad’ and deceiving the girl into the relationship. The attack occurred in the Nutan Bazar area of the Sonai constituency, where the pair was seen having a conversation near a local school.
A video of the assault quickly went viral on social media, further drawing attention to the incident. According to reports, the two individuals were of different religions, which allegedly fueled the mob’s anger.
Following the incident, police immediately rushed to the scene and managed to rescue the victims from the mob. The injured youth was taken into police custody, while the girl was sent to a shelter home for her protection.
An investigation into the matter is currently underway.
It may be mentioned that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on August 4 announced that the government will soon bring a law for life imprisonment in cases related to “love jihad”.
