Assam woman killed over suspicion of being a witch

First Published: 13th September, 2023 13:50 IST

The victim has been identified as Praneshwari Rabha. The locals have alleged that Rabha might have been killed over suspicion of she being a witch

In another incident of alleged witch hunting, a woman’s body was recovered with her hands and legs tied from a cremation ground in the Baida-Chatabari area in Assams’ Goalpara district.

The victim has been identified as Praneshwari Rabha.

The locals have alleged that Rabha might have been killed over suspicion of she being a witch.
As per inputs, the victim was reported missing since Tuesday afternoon.

It may be mentioned here that Praneshwari Rabha’s sister, Rameshwari Rabha, was thrown out of the village a few years ago on suspicion of being a witch, following which Praneshwari took shelter in Baida-Chatabari.

Not only this, Praneshwari Rabha’s brother was also murdered over suspicion of witchcraft a few years ago.

Rameshwari Rabha, who was thrown out of the village, alleged that Praneshwari was also murdered on suspicion of being a witch.

Many incidents of witch hunting have been reported in the state.

A mother was forced to live separately from her son and daughter for over 17 years after the woman had fallen prey to superstition in Naguwapara, a remote village along the Assam-Meghalaya border.

It was in 2005 that she was attacked by locals in the area on mere suspicion of practicing witchcraft and driven away from her home.

Since then, the ‘victim’ has not been allowed to enter Naguwapara.

However, the main question that arises is, despite the Assam Witch Hunting (Prohibition, Prevention, and Protection) Act, 2015, such superstitious practices are still practised in the state.
