Within a week of the horrific Dibrugarh University (DU) ragging case coming to light, another case of ragging has been reported. This time from Jagannath Barooah (JB) College, Jorhat, Assam. The victim has named 12 students in his complaint.
It was two months back that Pranabjyoti Chetia, a first semester student of the Assamese department of JB College had complained to the College authorities about being ragged by eight students including one ex-student. But three of the accused named in the complaint to the authorities pressurised Pranabjyoti to take the complaint back. Following which no action was taken.
Pranabjyoti left the hostel (Syed Abdul Malik hostel) after the incident.
“I had complained to the warden and the Principal. Three students put pressure on me to take the complaint back. No action was taken. I left the hostel out of fear and kept quiet about the incident,” victim Pranabjoyti to hails from Lakhimpur told media persons.
He said that after the Jorhat ragging case was reported and everyone took note of it, Pranabjoyti gathered courage to speak up and started sharing about the incident in social media. He had once again re-submitted his complaint.
Now an FIR has been filed by the College at the Jorhat sadar police station.
Speaking to the media, JB College Principal Dr Utpal Jyoti Mahanta said that the Anti-ragging committee of the College has started its enquiry and investigation into the case and a report would be submitted in the next 7-10 days.
Earlier, on November 27 morning, a junior student of Dibrugarh University jumped off the second floor of PNGB hostel of the University to escape the torture and save his life. The victim, Anand Sharma, is recovering after a backbone surgery for the injuries he sustained because of the torture during the brutal ragging that he had undergone from November 26 evening to early morning of November 27.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had lambasted the University for its extremely inefficient handling of the case.
