Assam: Two tigers spotted in Bura Chapori Wildlife Sanctuary post eviction drive

In some good news, two tigers were spotted days after the eviction drive in Bura Chapori in Assam’s Sonitpur district.
Sharing the news on Twitter, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sharma wrote that the government is committed to reclaiming the land that belongs to Assam’s flora and fauna.
“The Big Cat comes back home! Beautiful sightings of not just one but two majestic tigers by our camera traps days after an eviction drive at Burachapori RF. (7th & 9th March) We are committed to reclaiming the land which rightfully belongs to Assam’s diverse flaura & fauna.” CM Sarma tweeted.
In a mission to evict illegal settlers, the Sonitpur district administration launched a drive to reclaim 5976 ha of land at the Bura Chapori Wildlife Sanctuary that have been illegally encroached.
Around 2,513 households with 11,610 people residing in the area illegally have been evicted.
The Bura Chapori Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area located in Assam.
The wildlife sanctuary covers 44.06 km2, on the south bank of the Brahmaputra River in Sonitpur district.
The area was declared a forest reserve in 1974 and a wildlife sanctuary in 1995. It is located 40 km from Tezpur town and 181 km from Guwahati.
Earlier in January, CM Sarma shared pictures of rhinos spotted at the Pabho Reserve Forest in Assam’s Lakhimpur district, days after the eviction drive that resulted in the freeing of 4163 ha of land in the Reserve Forest from encroachment.
