With the situation tense between Ukraine and Russia amid the possibility of an all-out war, many Indians living in Ukraine are stranded in the country. Among them are many students hailing from Assam who are studying in various courses.
As per sources, about 50 students from Assam are studying in the Ternopil National Medical University of Ukraine. Uncertainty looms over them after the Indian embassy has issued a directive for all Indians in Ukraine whose stay is not necessary to leave the country at the earliest. The Assamese students are also looking to leave the country in such an uncertain situation at the earliest.
One such student is Daisy Medhi who hails from Morigaon in Assam. With the situation in Ukraine currently tense, Daisy’s parents are keeping in touch with her via video calls everyday.
Meanwhile, with air fare prices between Ukraine and India soaring sky high, many of the students are left in the lurch as they are unable to afford flights back home. In such a scenario, Daisy’s parents expressed concern for the safety of their daughter and hoped that it would be best if some arrangement is made by the Centre for Indians stranded in Ukraine to be able to return home.
In the meantime, the Centre is planning to send three special Tata Air flights between India to Ukraine on February 22, 24 and 26 to bring back stranded Indians back home from Ukraine. Indian students have been asked to monitor social media for any update on rescue efforts by the Indian government. As per the latest information, the Indian Embassy in Ukraine has opened up its helpline for a period of 24 hours for Indians residing there.
