After a two-year hiatus owing to COVID-19 pandemic, people in Assam is celebrating state’s biggest festival- Bohag Bihu with the traditional ‘Goru Bihu’ starting today.
Across Assam, people were seen taking their cows and cattle to nearby lakes, ponds and rivers to give them a ceremonial bath with a mixture of maah-halodhi (black gram and turmeric paste). The cattles were then fed and adorned with new noose and ropes know as ‘pogha’.
“Manuh Bihu” (Bihu of mankind) will be celebrated tomorrow on Friday, the first day of Bohag according to the Assamese calendar. On the day of Manuh Bihu, individuals will give Gamosa, a traditional rectangular piece of Assamese fabric, as a Bihuaan.
The capital city, Guwahati, is flooded with a variety of delights, including pithas (prepared by using rice powder, coconut, sesame and jaggery), laroos (prepared using coconut or sesame and jaggery or sugar) and curd.
‘Rongali Bihu’ is marked by the coming of the spring season- the blossoming of colourful flowers, the voice of the cuckoo, and the festive spirit in the air. The week-long Bihu celebrations are synonymous with dance, music, gifts, feasting and much more.
People across Assam are celebrating the festival by wearing traditional clothes like dhoti, gamosa, chadar and mekhela along with singing traditional Bihu songs called ‘Bihu Naams’.
Men and women in their traditional attires are taking part in Bohag Bihu festivities.
