Assam Registers Over 52% Drop In Crime Rate In 6 Years Between 2019 And 2023

In the Monthly State Crime Conference on Tuesday, Assam Police revealed that the crime rate per lakh population was 387.5 in 2019, which dropped to 183.1 by 2023
Assam has registered a significant drop of over 52% in the last six years from 2019 to 2023, Assam police revealed in its Monthly State Crime Conference on Tuesday.
The crime rate per lakh population in 2019 was 387.5, which dropped to 183.1 by 2023. Moreover, projections for 2024 (up to June) indicate a further drop and it is expected to reach 139.3.
The total number of registered cases has also seen a substantial decline over the past six years. From 132,877 cases in 2019, the number dropped to 65,395 in 2023.
For the first half of 2024, only 25,079 cases have been registered so far.
Meanwhile, the number of cases resulting in convictions has also increased.
The number of convictions was 752 in 2021, and this increased to 4,642 in 2022. In 2023, the total number of convictions rose to 4,835.
Around 2,798 convictions have been recorded in the state in the first half of 2024.
Alongside rising conviction rates, the efficiency of case processing has also improved. The percentage of cases in which charge sheets were filed (indicating the case is ready for trial) has increased from 34.30% in 2022 to 50.22% in 2023. For the first half of 2024, this figure stands at an impressive 63.31%.
Assam DGP GP Singh expressed satisfaction with these advancements, affirming the police force’s commitment to enhancing the criminal justice response mechanism in the state.
