Assam: Police gives hot chase to drug peddlers, SUV falls 100 ft down hillock, heroin worth Rs 18 cr seized

Upon frisking the vehicle, two drugs peddlers were apprehended and 100 soap boxes of heroin weighing 1 kg 300 gms recovered.

It was a huge catch for the Assam Police, after an interstate drugs cartel was busted this morning leading to the seizure of heroin worth Rs 18 crore in the international market.

Police had received a source information that a Manipur based group was supplying narcotics through Assam. Soon a team of STF led by an Additional SP swung into action.

Accordingly, the group was tracked down, but sensing trouble, the drug peddlers onboard a SUV tried to escape and oversped.

What ensued was a hot chase by the police to the drug peddlers.

However, the driver of the SUV lost control and the vehicle skidded off the road before falling almost 100 ft down the Powa Mecca hillock in Hajo on the outskirts of Guwahati.

Upon frisking the vehicle, two drugs peddlers were apprehended and 100 soap boxes of heroin weighing 1 kg 300 gms recovered.

Further search of their rented house at Jalukbari led to recovery of another 65 pkts of heroin weighing 900 gms. A total of 2.2 kg heroin was seized.

Both the accused identified as Abdul Hassan and Mushtaq Ali, are from Manipur. Among them police said Hassan was the key player of the entire drugs cartel.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma who has waged a war against drugs since assuming office, lauded the efforts in busting the drugs racket. He tweeted and said,”Early this morning, @KamrupPolice apprehended two drug peddlers, natives of a neighboring state, who were involved in the distribution of narcotics in Assam. They were found in possession of 2.2 kg of heroin concealed in soap boxes and packets.

Yesterday too in yet another anti-nacortics operation the Karbi Anglong police arrested two people at Janakpukhuri, along the border of a neighbouring state and seized 87 soap cases containing 1.132 kg Heroin and Rs 37,000 cash from them.

Among the big seizures made this month so far include-

June 22– Karimganj police intercepted two vehicles coming from a neighboring state at Nilkantapur, Bazaricherra in Karimganj and seized 250 soap cases containing 3.2 kg of Heroin. Five accused were also apprehended.

June 14– In one of the largest recoveries so far, the Karimganj Police intercepted three trucks at Churaibari and seized 95,360 bottles of banned Phensedyl cough syrup. 2 accused were also apprehended.

June 5– The Karbi Anglong police intercepted a four wheeler vehicle at Number 2 Nambor Forest Bridge and seized 89 soap boxes containing 1.104 Kg heroin hidden in the door panel of the vehicle. The accused driver was also apprehended.

June 3– The Cachar police seized 143 soap cases containing 2.2 kg Heroin at Katagashtal, Silchar and apprehended two accused in the operation.
