Assam: PM Modi to lay base for first semiconductor plant in NE on March 13

The semiconductor plant will be a game-changer in terms of boosting the economy in the entire Northeast will be set up at Jagiroad in Assam's Morigaon district.
March 13 will indeed be a historic day for the entire Northeast and especially Assam, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually lay base for the Rs 27,000 crore semiconductor plant in Morigaon.
Once fully operational, the semiconductor plant will be a game-changer in terms of boosting the economy in the entire Northeast.
Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma took stock of the progress for the project and spoke to newspersons about the developments.
CM Sarma said, “On March 13, Prime Minister Modi will virtually lay base for the setting up of the Tata’s semiconductor plant. As PM Modi had said during his visit to Assam there has to be heritage and development. This project is a good mix of heritage and development.”
MLA from Jagiroad and a minister in the Assam Cabinet Pijush Hazarika also took stock of the preparedness ahead of the foundation laying ceremony and said, “Prime Minister Modi will lay the base virtually and CM Himanta Biswa Sarma will be present here. More than 30,000 people will be present here. With an investment of Rs 27, 000 crore this is the first ever private industry in Assam.”
The Union Cabinet approved setting up three semiconductor-making units at an investment of Rs 1.26 lakh-crore as part of an attempt to cut India’s dependence on imports to meet requirements of chips, of which one will be in Assam.
Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (TSAT) will be setting up the semiconductor unit.
It will have a capacity of 48 million chips per day for automotive, electric vehicles, consumer electronics, telecom, and mobile phones.
