The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), a key ally of the BJP in Assam, is facing significant challenges in the upcoming Bongaigaon assembly by-election.
This constituency has been a stronghold for the AGP, previously represented by Phanibhushan Choudhury for 40 years before he was elected as an MP form Barpeta Lok Sabha seat this year.
The party yesterday nominated Diptimoyee Choudhury, Phanibhushan’s wife and an eight-time AGP MLA, for the by-election scheduled for November 13, alongside 4 other seats-Dholai, Behali, Samaguri and Sidli in Assam.
However, this decision has sparked discontent among some AGP members in Bongaigaon.
Last week, 36 party workers, including the district president and secretary Sailen Sarkar resigned in protest against the nomination.
Longtime AGP leaders Sailen Sarkar and Bijoy Singha, who had hoped to secure the ticket, expressed their disappointment as Diptimoyee’s candidacy dashed their aspirations.
The internal strife poses a serious challenge for the AGP as it prepares for the by-polls.
