Assam: Illegal sand mining poses threat livelihood of Bajali residents
Illegal sand mining along the banks of river Pahumara in Lower Assam’s Bajali district, has posed a serious threat to the people residing in Rajakhat area.
Illegal sand mining along the banks of river Pahumara in Lower Assam’s Bajali district, has posed a serious threat to the people residing in Rajakhat area. Extensive sand mining along the river banks have threatened the livelihood of the people in the area, in the past few years, floods have destroyed houses, livestock and farmlands.
Locals alleged that sand mafias have been illegally mining sand from the river banks day in and day out. However the concerned department has failed to nab the people involved in the illegal activities.
Speaking to Northeast Live, a senior citizen of Rajakhat village said during floods residents have to look for higher ground and stay in the Hilly areas. He also alleged that the Bajali Administration and the Forest department have turned a deaf ear to their pleas. Furthermore, he appealed to the local administrations as well as the MLA of Bhawanipur, Phanidhar Talukdar to look into the matter.
Meanwhile, the Bajrang Dal has also demanded immediate action against the mafias. In a statement, the Bajrang Dall has demanded of the Bajali Administration and the Forest and environment minister Parimal Suklabaidya to look into the issue.
