A raid by the Assam Special Task Force at Baihata in the state’s Kamrup district has led to the recovery of heroin worth Rs 1.2 crore.
Acting on a tip-off, the STF raided an Arunachal-bound bus at Baihata in the early hours today. During the search operation the team recovered 150 grams of heroin from a person who hails from Barpeta, a lower Assam district.
The STF has over the past months made a number of recoveries of narcotics in the state, which is often used by carriers as a transit point to other states and the rest of the country. Drug abuse has risen locally as well, with a growing number of youngsters now addicted. Often, those addicted to drugs have taken to crime to pay for their daily fix. An indicator of the magnitude of the problem can be seen in the growing number of drug rehabilitation centres that have sprouted up in the state.
Neighbouring states such as Manipur, Nagaland and Mizoram too have fallen victim to the Northeast’s drug menace in the region.
