Both male and female teachers should dress in clean, modest, and decent clothes in sober colors that do not look flashy.
The Assam government has implemented a dress code for college teachers, emphasising the need for a more professional and appropriate appearance in the classroom.
College teachers in the state will no longer be allowed to come to work in T-shirts and jeans, the state education department has directed on orders from governor Gulab Chand Kataria.
According to a notification, “It has come to the notice that some teachers of Higher educational institutes have the habit of wearing the dress of their choice, which sometimes does not appear to be acceptable by public at large,” education secretary Narayan Konwar said.
“Since a teacher is expected to be an example of all sorts of decency, especially while discharging their duties, it has become necessary to follow a dress code that should reflect a sense of decorum, decency, professionalism and seriousness of purpose at the work place”, it added.
The dress code for male teachers is formal shirt and pants, dhoti-pyjama, or other traditional attire. Female teachers should wear decent salwar suits, sarees, or mekhela chador, and avoid casual clothing such as T-shirts, jeans, or leggings.
Both male and female teachers should dress in clean, modest, and decent clothes in sober colors that do not look flashy. Casual and party apparel should be strictly avoided.
The notification further said that any deviation from the dress code could invite disciplinary action.
Earlier in May this year, the Assam government issued a similar dress code for school teachers.
