In an interesting development, Assam government on Saturday issued an order announcing dress code for teachers in all educational institutions.
The order issued by the Department of School Education, Assam following orders from Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria said that the decision to prescribe a dress code was felt necessary because, “It has come to the notice of the undersigned that some teachers of educational institutions are found in the habit of wearing the dress of their choose which sometimes does not appear to be acceptable by public at large,” the order read.
The order further said that teachers are supposed to be examples of decency and “it has become necessary to follow a dress code to reflect a sense of decorum, decent, professionalism and seriousness of purpose at the work place.”
As per the order dated 19 May, 2023:
• Male teachers will have to wear formal shirt-pant only. No t-shirts, jeans, casual attire would be allowed
• Female teachers will have to wear salwar suit/ mekhela chador. No casual attire, leggings, jeans, t-shirt would be allowed
• Male-female teachers to wear, clean, modest, decent clothes in sober colours
• Casual party apparel strictly not allowed
The dress code has to be complied scrupulously and any deviation would invite disciplinary action as per rules, the order said.
