Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed that light vehicles will be allowed to move through the Kaziranga section of the national highway starting today, with a marginal improvement in the state’s overall flood situation.
In a message on X, Chief Minister Sarma wrote, “In view of the improvement in the overall flood situation, from today, light motor vehicles and buses will be allowed to move through the Kaziranga section of the national highway normally, subject to speed restrictions. However, trucks will be allowed to move only in a convoy.”
Traffic diversions were issued on July 1 to ensure the safety of animals coming out of the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve in search of shelter.
Passenger vehicles, both private and commercial, were asked to move at a regulated speed escorted by police and forest staff every half an hour.
According to the advisory, all commercial trucks travelling to upper Assam were rerouted through the north bank of the Brahmaputra via the Kalia Bhomora Bridge and the Bogibeel Bridge.
Moreover, commercial trucks en route Nagaland were rerouted through the Nagaon-Hojai-Karbi Anglong route, and every commercial truck going to lower Assam from Dibrugarh and Tinsukia was rerouted via the north bank through Bogibeel Bridge.
Heavy commercial vehicles going to lower Assam from Jorhat, Sivasagar and Charaideo were also diverted from Numaligarh Tiniali towards Karbi Anglong, Hojai and Nagaon.
