Lok Sabha Speaker inaugurating the new building termed the State Legislative Assemblies of any state as Temple for Democracy
It was a momentous occasion for the people of Assam as the state got its permanent Legislative Assembly building after 51 years, after the capital of Assam was shifted from Shillong to Dispur in 1972.
The new building of the Assam Assembly was inaugurated today. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla inaugurated the new building in presence of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Speaker Biswajit Daimary, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, MPs from Assam and MLAs.
Addressing the event, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said, “The building of any State Legislative Assembly is not just a building. This is a temple for our democracy. Sitting in this temple, we work only for public welfare. That is why, in the journey of 75 years of this democracy, through socio-economic development, we have taken the nation forward.”
“Every serious issue should be discussed. But there should be no obstructions in Vidhan Sabha and Lok Sabha. People have a lot of expectations from Vidhan Sabha and Lok Sabha. When they elect you, they do it with a lot of expectations and aspirations. There should be discussions and dialogues in these Houses, and laws should be formed here,” Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla further said.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also spoke on the occasion and said, “The healthy conduct of all legislators in the Vidhan Sabha will inspire the people of Assam. I’m confident all my colleagues will work towards furthering the spirit of democracy. May it continue to serve as a beacon for positive change & development in Assam.”
Chief Minister Sarma added, “The new Assam Legislative Assembly, a symbol of progress and democracy, reflects the social, cultural, intellectual diversity and prowess. We have developed it with all modern amenities in line with the Centre’s Central Vista project.”
Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary speaking on the occasion said,”I have always worked for safeguarding the sanctity of the Assembly so that the glory remains intact. The main basis of democracy is the Legislature where laws are being framed and also the values of the Constitution can be safeguarded.
At this hour I have to appreciate the decisive role played by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for setting up the new Assembly building. Under his leadership there has been a revolutionary social and economical transformation.
I am confident that the new Assembly building will give a new impetus to the Assam Legislative Assembly. On behalf of the people of Assam, I express my sincere thanks to the Hon’ble Speaker, Lok Sabha.”
The construction of the new building in Dispur started in 2009 close to the premises of the old Assam Assembly building. The construction cost of the new building was initially estimated at Rs 234 crore but was later increased to Rs 351 crore.
The new assembly building, which is fitted with cutting-edge technology, is a sign of modernity and progress. This technical development is expected to speed up legislative proceedings and pave the way for a more efficient and transparent governing structure.
