In a big boost to Assam’s industrial sector, coal mining operations at Tikok colliery in Margherita sub division of eastern Assam’s Tinsukia district resumed from today.

Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma along with Union coal minister Prahlad Joshi inaugurated the resumption of coal mining operations.

Coal India Limited which has its operations under the North Eastern Coal Fields or NECF has its mines in Margherita sub division of Tinsukia district.

It may be mentioned that coal mining has been the economic backbone of Margherita ever since the days of British rule when coal mining operations were first initiated in the area under the erstwhile Assam Railway and Trading (ART) Company in 1873.

However, all operations of the company were halted in June 2020 due to various technical issues and environmental factors. Now, after having rectified several of the technical problems, mining operations have resumed operations from today.

Meanwhile, speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Sarma expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as well as Union Minister Prahlad Joshi for making it possible to resume operations of coal mining in Margherita. He added that locals of Margherita were at the receiving end economically in the last two years, and resumption of operations was crucial.

Union Minister Prahlad Joshi also expressed his happiness on the resumption of coal mining operations.

Meanwhile, Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Rameshwar Teli stated locals of Margherita and Lido had to face extreme financial crunch due to closure of coil mining operations in 2020. Teli lauded the efforts of local MLA Bhaskar Sharma for constantly keeping in touch with the Assam Chief Minister to find a solution on the matter.
