In a big boost to Assam’s industrial sector, coal mining operations at Tikok colliery in Margherita sub division of eastern Assam’s Tinsukia district are all set to resume from today.
Assam CM FDr. Himanta Biswa Sarma along with Union coal minister Prahlad Joshi will be inaugurating the resumption of coal mining operations at the Tikok colliery in Margherita at around 2pm today. Coal India Limited which has its operations under the North Eastern Coal Fields or NECF has its mines in Margherita sub division of Tinsukia district.
It may be mentioned that coal mining has been the economic backbone of Margherita ever since the days of British rule when coal mining operations were first initiated in the area under the erstwhile Assam Railway and Trading (ART) Company in 1973.
However, all operations of the company were halted in June 2020 due to various technical issues and environmental factors. Now, after having rectified several of the technical problems, mining operations are set to resume from today.
It may be noted that resumption of coal operations will also come as a big boost for Assam’s tea sector as coal has been a major feed stock for the hundreds of tea gardens in Assam as well as many other industrial units.
