Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh commended Assam Chief Minister Hemanta Biswa Sarma for his efforts in the war on drugs.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today took a cheeky dig at poppy cultivators calling them ‘local Pablo Escobars’- a reference to the infamous Colombian drug lord Pablo Emilio Escobar and warned them against their involvement in the illegal drug trade.

Taking to X , CM Sarma shared a video showing a tractor destroying illegal poppy crops, accompanied by a large presence of police officers.

Sarcastically, he apologised to the cultivators for “spoiling their ‘Udta Assam’ party,” a reference to the infamous drug culture after authorities successfully destroyed illegal poppy crops worth Rs 27.20 crore.

CM Sarma highlighted the significant seizure of 170 Bighas (over 56 acres) of poppy cultivation in the Char areas, carried out by Goalpara Police in January this year.

“Dear Local Pablo Escobars, Sorry to spoil your planned Udta Assam party! Because @Goalpara_Police destroyed 170 Bighas of poppy cultivation in the Char areas worth ₹27.20 crore in January. So next time you think of drugs, think of @assampolice first,” the Chief Minister tweeted.

Meanwhile, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh commended Assam Chief Minister Hemanta Biswa Sarma for his efforts in the war on drugs.

CM Biren Singh emphasised the need for unity across the region in saving future generations from the scourge of narcotics.

Who was Pablo Emilio Escobar?

Pablo Escobar was a Colombian drug lord whose illegal operations destabilised Colombia’s democratic government and expanded the global drug trade, causing widespread violence and corruption.
