CM Sarma said that while the crackdown initially saw 5,000 arrests of individuals involved in child marriages, the number has now reduced to 2,000.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has once again pledged to eradicate child marriage in the state by 2026, emphasizing both strict enforcement and new initiatives aimed at empowering young girls.

Speaking to media, the Chief Minister on Sunday said, “As Chief Minister, I pledge to eradicate child marriage by 2026.”

CM Sarma said, “While the crackdown initially saw 5,000 arrests of individuals involved in child marriages, the number has now reduced to 2,000, reflecting the progress made in curbing the illegal practice. However, the crackdown continues, with 400 more people recently arrested for their involvement in child marriages across the state.”

In addition to enforcement, the Assam government has launched several initiatives aimed at safeguarding and uplifting girl children. One such scheme is Nijut Moina, designed to empower young girls and ensure they have access to education, health services, and opportunities for a brighter future.

“We are also working to ensure that every girl in Assam has the support she needs to thrive and break the cycle of early marriage,” CM Sarma added.

The Chief Minister reiterated that the government’s approach involves both deterrence and empowerment, as they continue to push forward with their goal of making Assam free of child marriage by 2026.
