47-Year-Old Undertrial Prisoner Found Hanging in Kokrajhar District Jail’s Bathroom

A 47-year-old undertrial prisoner was found hanging inside the bathroom of Kokrajhar District Jail in Assam in the early hours today.
The deceased, identified as Nakul Mondal, hailed from West Khatalpara village under the jurisdiction of Basugaon Police Station in Chirang district.
His body was discovered in the presence of the District Magistrate and police officials and was later sent for postmortem examination.
Mondal had been arrested on April 30 for attacking his younger brother, Sahadev Mondal with a sharp weapon over a land-related family dispute, causing serious injuries.
He was lodged in Kokrajhar Jail following his arrest by Basugaon Police.
However, Mondal’s family members have raised doubts over the nature of his death, questioning the suicide narrative.
One of his family members said, “This cannot be a suicide. His feet were touching the ground even though he was found hanging from a ventilation fan in the bathroom. After the arrest, he was under police custody. How can such an incident take place under their watch? We demand justice and answers.”
Authorities have yet to comment officially on the allegations. An investigation into the incident is currently underway.
