Places like Nazira and Tinsukia are witnessing house-to-house inquiries by AATASU to determine if any migrant Muslim individuals of doubtful citizenship are residing there
Following the horrific rape of a 14-year-old girl in Dhing in the Nagaon district, Assam, a series of protests have been launched against Muslims of migrant origin in the state.
The All Assam Tai Ahom Students’ Union (AATASU) has launched a movement in Eastern Assam’s Sivasagar district to drive out Muslims of migrant origin.
AATASU has begun a drive to identify Muslims of migrant origin with alleged doubtful citizenship.
Places like Nazira and Tinsukia are witnessing house-to-house inquiries by AATASU to determine if any migrant Muslim individuals of doubtful citizenship are residing there.
AATASU volunteers have also called upon traders and businessmen in Upper Assam areas not to engage with or employ such migrant Muslims, who mostly hail from Lower Assam districts.
“We have already sent a 7-day ultimatum to Muslims of migrant origin to vacate their rented houses and leave Sivasagar at the earliest. We have also urged landlords and the owners of brick kilns, where many of these individuals are employed as labourers, not to entertain them any further,” AATASU volunteers said while speaking to the media.
“If necessary actions are not taken against these illegal migrants within the next 7 days, AATASU and the 30 other indigenous organizations of Sivasagar will be forced to intensify our protest,” they added.
A strong drive was also witnessed in Nazira today, where AATASU volunteers were seen identifying migrant Muslim individuals. Similar scenes were observed in Tinsukia, where AATASU launched a major drive against migrant Muslim workers.
Meanwhile, while AATASU has begun this anti-migrant drive in Upper Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has appealed to the organizations not to take the law into their own hands.
