Two youths from Rampalbil village in Kokrajhar district of Assam – Ram Prasad Narzary and Sanjay Basumatary are among the 40 labourers stuck for over 120 hours (5 days) in the Uttarakhand Tunnel.
The families of Ram Prasad and Sanjay are pinning their hopes on the government to get their loved ones back home safe.
Speaking to Northeast Live Sanjay Basumatary’s sister said, “I spoke to my elder brother, he is stuck inside but safe. The government must look into it. I am praying to the Almighty for his safe return. The government must see that my brother is rescued safely.”
“The government must take steps to bring back my husband. He is the only bread winner. I have a school going girl to take care of. Because of this incident, he is unable to send money, we are facing problems here. If something happens to him, how will I survive. Who will take care of our daughter? So I request the government to take urgent steps for evacuating him,” Ram Prasad Narzary’s wife Supriya, almost in tears said.
The families are now praying and hoping for the safe return of the duo.
Frantic efforts are on to rescue the workers trapped inside the Silkyara Tunnel in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand.
On November 12, a portion of the under-construction Silkyara Tunnel collapsed, trapping the 40 construction workers within the debris. Elite rescue teams from Thailand and Norway, including the one that successfully rescued the trapped children from a cave in Thailand in 2018, have joined the forces in the ongoing rescue operation.
The tunnel is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ambitious Char Dham Highway project of nearly 1,000 kilometers, a multimillion-dollar infrastructure plan to improve connectivity in Uttarakhand and ensure better access to important pilgrimage locations.
