AAGSU also demanded compensation of Rs 50 lakhs from the Arunachal Pradesh government for Rohit Bahadur Chetry's family
Massive protests erupted along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border today as members of the Tinsukia unit of the All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union (AAGSU) blocked National Highway 52 and the inter-state border check gates between the two states demanding capital punishment for those who killed 12-year-old Rohit Bahadur Chetry last month after he was kidnapped on July 22.
“Two persons from Arunachal Pradesh killed 12-year-old Rohit Bahadur Chetry, and we demand capital punishment for the two killers. We urged the Arunachal Pradesh government to try the two killers on a fast track court, and until justice is not served, we will not sit quiet,” AAGSU said.
AAGSU also demanded compensation of Rs 50 lakhs from the Arunachal Pradesh government for Rohit’s family.
“If the Arunachal Pradesh government don’t accept our demands, we will stage protest across Assam and block the inter-state road in the entire state,” they added.
The check gates blocked by the protestors include Namchik Gate, Jairampur Gate, Namdang Gate, Dirok Gate, Bordumsa Gate, and Sunpura Gate.
12-year-old Rohit Bahadur Chetry was kidnapped on July 22 while he was returning home from school.
Soon after his kidnapping, Rohit’s father, Noor Bahadur Chetry, received a ransom call demanding Rs 15 lakh, which later came down to Rs 50,000 after negotiation.
Rohit’s father immediately filed an FIR, and a joint operation was launched by a police team from Tezu town and the Sadiya Regional Gorkha Union.
The police arrested the two individuals during the operation.
Meanwhile, during interrogation, the two suspects confessed to Rohit’s murder. They revealed that they had dumped his body in the Kalikhola area.
The murder sparked sharp reactions from the locals, and the Gorkha Students’ Union blockaded the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh road, demanding capital punishment for the two accused.
