5 ‘exotic’ monkeys, wallaby rescued in Assam; 1 held

A team of forest personnel intercepted an Innova vehicle where six cages containing the animals were being ferried.

Assam Forest department officials seized five ‘exotic’ species of monkey and a wallaby from a vehicle in Hajo area of the state on Wednesday night.

Meanwhile, one person has been arrested in connection with the case while another managed to escape from the spot.

Police have initiated an investigation to ascertain from where the animals have been caught and to which destination they were being taken.

One of the animals, ‘wallaby’ is a marsupial indigenous to Australia. Found in the brushlands of Australia it belongs to the Kangaroo family.

Earlier on April 12, five chimpanzees were rescued from a Guwhati-bound vehicle in Karbi Anglong district.

Two persons hailing from Manipur were arrested regarding the incident.
