In a major breakthrough, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested 15 persons including 3 women in connection with the planting of bomb-like substances in different parts of Assam on August 15, 2024.
As per inputs, sleuths of the NIA arrested 3 persons each from Dibrugarh and Lakhimpur, 2 each from Guwahati and Jorhat and 1 each from Tinsukia, Sadiya, Nagaon, Nalbari and Tamulpur.
It may be mentioned that the United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) in the mail on August 14 claimed that explosives had been planted in around 25 locations in Guwahati, Sivasagar, Lakua, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Laluk, Borghat, Nalbari, Tamulpur and Dibrugarh.
Following this, Assam Police had launched search operations across the state and recovered bomb-like materials from Lakhimpur, Satgaon and Last Gate, Pan Bazar (heart of the city and a busy locality) and Gandhi Mandap area of Guwahati and in Lakhimpur on August 15-16.
Additionally, there was utter panic and chaos at Guwahati’s City Centre Mall on August 19 after a suspected bomb threat led to the sudden evacuation of shoppers and staff from the mall which is located few kilometres away from Dispur with the busy GS Road on one side and the Zoo Road (R G Barua Road) on the other.
However, the devices reportedly failed to detonate due to technical malfunctions.
