Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday launched the third edition of the Assam Government’s flagship poverty alleviation initiative, ‘Orunodoi’, which will benefit 37.2 lakh women through direct cash transfers.
Under Orunodoi 3.0, over 12.5 lakh women have been added as beneficiaries, making it the largest state-run Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme in Assam’s history.
Chief Minister Sarma inaugurated the distribution of Orunodoi Cards to the new beneficiaries at a ceremony held in Guwahati.
The scheme, aimed primarily at empowering women from low-income families, provides a monthly cash transfer of Rs 1,250 directly to their bank accounts on the 10th of each month.
The selection process for ‘Orunodoi 3.0’ ensures that eligible beneficiaries from the previous editions are retained unless they no longer meet the new guidelines.
Initially launched on December 1, 2020, and followed by a second edition on December 14, 2022, the ‘Orunodoi’ scheme has steadily evolved to better serve the needs of Assam’s most vulnerable populations. With this latest rollout, the government aims to enhance economic support for impoverished families and continue its commitment to poverty alleviation in the state.
