Who killed ex-Arunachal MLA Yumsen Matey? Is there a political angle?

Is former Arunachal MLA Yumsen Matey’s killing a political murder? Speculations are rife over this since 4 years ago, Tirong Aboh who had succeeded Yumsen Matey, as an NPP MLA from the Khonsa West seat had to face a similar fate.

Just 2 days ahead of the announcement of assembly election results, Aboh, his son and 9 others were shot dead in the Bogapani area by militants on May 21, 2019.

In case of Matey, he was an ex-MLA and also an aspirant for the upcoming 2024 Arunachal Pradesh assembly elections from the Khonsa (West) assembly constituency.

The Arunachal Pradesh police too is looking into this angle as thorough investigations have already begun with the police and other security agencies working in close co-ordination.

IGP (Law and Order) Chukhu Apa spoke exclusively to Northeast Live and shared details about the spine chilling murder.

IGP Apa said, “The incident happened yesterday at around between 12:30 to 1 pm at Raho village. In the morning he left Khonsa toward Raho village Dadang area. In between they changed the course, they proceeded towards Raho village and after crossing Raho they stopped at the last roadhead.
He was accompanied by 1 driver and 2 workers, they were asked to stay in the vehicle. But Matey proceeded and stepped out of the car saying that he had to discuss something (individuals unknown). After that he went, someone had come to receive him and both moved ahead. After 30-40 minutes they heard a gunshot and the man who took him (Matey)came back and said (to the driver and the party workers in the vehicle) your boss is no more, and asked them to go home. The man asked them not to reveal about the incident to anyone.”

Apa said that on the basis of the information received an FIR has been registered, but as of now the investigations are yet to get a clear indication of the killing.

IGP Chukhu Apa stated, “Police has registered an FIR. We are investigation on this but there is no clear indication. We cannot definitely say who is involved but a person has been named in the FIR. So we are investigation on that.”

Asked if it was a political murder, IGP Chukhu Apa in his response said, “It is very early to comment on what has happened. Regarding the motive of the killing I cannot definitely say at this stage, because we are still looking into the case.”

IGP Apa also informed that action plans have been initiated with vulnerability mapping of the areas being exercised. Regarding deployment of forces, the Arunachal IGP said that the Assam Rifles, CRPF, Arunachal Police, STF are already on the job.

Former Arunachal MLA, Yumsen Matey, was killed this evening allegedly by militants at Rahu village under Lazu police station in Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh.

According to initial reports, Yumsen Matey, the former MLA of Khonsa (West), was attending some function at Raho village when some youths reportedly whisked him away.

Matey was the Khonsa (West) MLA from 2009 to 2014. He has been a Congress politician and won the seat on a Congress ticket but in 2015 he joined BJP.

However, the killing of 2 public representatives (MLAs) who once represented the Khonsa (West) seat in Arunachal Pradesh is definitely a matter of grave concern, especially in the law and order front.
