DFO Chukhhu Loma termed the discovery of snow leopard in the West Kameng district as enthralling. Focus on conservation plans.

Wildlife conservationists have a reason to cheer for as the rare species of snow leopard has been spotted in Arunachal Pradesh’s West Kameng district. Not only this, continuous research and study has also established that the district is a home for many other snow leopards. And this was the reason why the frontier state joined the rest of the globe for the first time ever to celebrtate International Snow Leopard Day.

A special event was held in West Kameng district to mark the occasion. DFO Chukhhu Loma termed the discovery of snow leopard in the West Kameng district as enthralling. He also highlighted the need to make the local mass aware about existence of this rare species in the region.

The DFO further added that solid conservation action plan for the rare feline species is the need of the hour. In this regard, Chukhhu Loma sought people’s co-operation to protect, conserve the species and its habitat.

DFO Loma also appealed students and cultural bodies to help out with education awareness campaigns for the protection of this rare species.

In the project on snow leopard survey, under the guidance of DFO Chukkhu Loma, researchers Lobsang Serap Phaichilupa and Lobsang Namgyal have been industriously working hard since the last couple of years surveying Snow Leopard habitat in Potok region.

The Potok Region is a high altitude ecosystem 4000-6000 metre above sea level, part of the Eastern Himalayas under Dirang range in West Kameng.
