Is Arunachal’s Science & Tech Department Flouting Hiring Rules? Activist Alleges Over 30 Illegal Appointments

Are recruitment norms being flouted in the Department of Centre for Earth Sciences and Himalayan Studies and the Centre for Science and Technology of Arunachal Pradesh?

A serious allegation has surfaced, claiming that over 30 illegal appointments were made in the department without any public advertisement or adherence to due recruitment procedures.

Activist Pritom Jomoh has accused the department of bypassing set hiring norms, raising grave concerns over transparency and accountability in government employment practices.

Pritom Jomoh claimed that the Director of the department, Tana Tage, appointed individuals to various posts without adhering to recruitment norms.

Jomoh said, ‘The director hired many of his relatives. Most of them were appointed on a contractual basis between 2022 and 2023, but have been continuously working and drawing salaries for the past 2-3 years without any public advertisement or transparency.”

Jomoh said that these individuals have been drawing salaries for years under a state-funded scheme, with appointments stretching back as far as 2011.

What adds further weight to the allegations is a termination order issued on April 16, 2024 by Secretary Sumedha (IAS), relieving 30 contractual employees hired under the same grant-in-aid and project-mode arrangements.

The termination letter cited the lack of codal formalities and stated that all such appointments under the Centre for Earth Sciences and Himalayan Studies stood cancelled.

The affected individuals have since been relieved from their contractual posts.

The matter has raised serious questions about transparency and accountability in government appointments, and the activists have demanded a thorough investigation and said they had no information regarding the termination order dated April 16.
