The Chakma-Hajong issue reached the national capital today with several groups including the Committee for Citizenship Rights of the Chakmas and Hajongs of Arunachal Pradesh, and the Chakma Development Foundation of India staging a protest at Jantar Mantar.
The protesters demonstrated against the alleged racial profiling of the Chakma and Hajong community by Arunachal Pradesh government through a special census only for them.
It may be mentioned here that Arunachal Chief Minister Pema Khandu announced that the Chakmas and Hajongs who have been residing in the state since the last 60 years will be relocated outside Arunachal.
Besides, training of the government enumerators is also scheduled to be conducted at Diyun under Changlang district from today.
As such, the protestors also submitted a memorandum to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, wherein they reiterated the demand to immediately stop and abandon the ongoing census procedures of only the Chakma and Hajong people. The protesters also sought an end to the repression on the Chakmas and Hajongs through racial profiling, proper implementation of the Supreme Court judgments on the conferment of citizenship, and compliance with the directions of the NHRC.
