Besides providing connectivity, the tunnel will reduce carbon footprint and will improve the ecology of this area.

The all strategic Nechiphu Tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh’s West Kameng district will be operational soon with works almost getting the finishing touches.

Once completed the all weather tunnel will be a boost to the nation’s military prowess, since it will cut short the distance for the troops to reach the border with China, the Line of Actual (LAC), by 6 kms and travel time by 20 minutes.

Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein today inspected the tunnel as his convoy passed throught the tunnel.

Mein informed that the tunnel will be operational soon.

Lauding the efforts of the BRO in making the dream project a reality, deputy Chief Minister Chown Mein tweeted,”I am happy to inform all that it will be opened to public traffic soon.
Kudos to the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) on the successful construction work for the Nechiphu Tunnel at Bhalukpong-Bomdila road (NH-13), Arunachal Pradesh.
Their commitment to excellence has brought us a unique 500-meter-long “D-shaped, single tube double lane tunnel” on the Balipara-Charduar-Tawang (BCT) Road in the West Kameng district.
The Nechiphu Tunnel is a testament to their engineering prowess and their dedication to the development of our nation’s infrastructure.”

On June 18, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu had stated that the Nechiphu Tunnel was on the verge of completion which will be inaugurated soon. Chief Minister Khandu also had appreciated the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for playing his part in transforming the frontier state by constructing over 20,000 km road in the last 9 years.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on October 20, 2022 had laid the foundation for the Nechiphu Tunnel. The first blast to commence work on the was also triggered the same day.

On May 20, 2022 the BRO conducted the final “break through blast” to mark the successful completion of excavation work of the Nechiphu Tunnel.

Besides providing connectivity, the tunnel will reduce carbon footprint and will improve the ecology of this area.

The tunnel is being constructed under Project Vartak by the Border Roads Organisaiton (BRO) between km 82.00 and km 88.00 along Balipara-Chariduar-Tawang Road connecting Assam at an altitude of 5,600 feet.

Construction of the tunnel is being accomplished by cutting through fragile Himalayan mountains with highly fractured rock under low overburden.

This is one of the many tunnels conceived by the Border Roads Organization along Border areas to improve existing road geometrics, avoid foggy areas, circumvent slide prone areas and reduce black spots on the roads to offer greater safety to the Military and civil traffic movement.
