Arunachal Pradesh: Strategic Hayuliang-Chaglagham Road Crumbles Amid Promises of ‘All-Weather’ Access

First Published: 5th May, 2025 16:01 IST

This road serves as a lifeline for thousands of people living in the region

Whenever ministers or top officials promise the development of “high-quality infrastructure,” especially roads in the frontier state of Arunachal Pradesh, they often assure the construction of all-weather roads. While it is true that some roads built using the latest technologies now serve as functional, all-weather routes, several crucial roads continue to suffer from years even decades of neglect.

One such example is the Hayuliang–Chaglagham Road in Anjaw district. This road serves as a lifeline for thousands of people living in the region. However, large patches of this vital road have remained in a pathetic condition for years. Even when the authorities rebuild the road, it gets washed away almost every year allegedly due to poor-quality construction and rampant corruption.

The repeated damage not only disrupts the daily lives of civilians but also causes serious problems for Indian Army personnel, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and other forces stationed in the strategically important Chaglagham area near the Indo-China border. This route is critical for troop movement, supplies, and emergency services.

Local residents have repeatedly raised concerns, but the government has yet to provide a lasting solution. As the state continues to talk about infrastructure development, the crumbling condition of the Hayuliang–Chaglagham Road stands as a glaring example of broken promises and administrative apathy.
