Protests erupted in Khonsa, the district headquarters of Tirap in Arunachal Pradesh following the killing of a 51-year-old public leader in an encounter which took place between security forces and suspected NSCN militants at Kulagaon on Sunday.

Youth organizations and students unions have stated that the deceased, identified as Retto Khako, had ‘no links’ with the suspected NSCN cadres involved in the incident, but was killed by the forces.

However, security forces have maintained that Retto was killed during the crossfire.

Meanwhile, protesters took to the streets of Khonsa town with placards and banners condemning the incident and demanding justice for the victim. Protesters also burnt tires to block the movement of vehicles.

It may be mentioned here that the Tirap district administration has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.

Tirap Deputy Commissioner Taro Mize has informed Northeast Live that he had asked Additional Deputy Commissioner H. Kri to conduct an inquiry and submit the report within 15 days.
