Arunachal CM inaugurates series of hydel projects, PM Modi lauds state’s hydel iniatiative

The Arunachal Pradesh government has prioritized in power generation through different hydro projects and thereby cutting down carbon emission.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu is overseeing all the developments pertaining to this and is making the best effort to boost the power sector of the state.

As a part of this, Chief Minister Khandu inaugurated a series of projects including the Phase-2 of the Sirikorong MHS with a capacity of (2X150)KW at Lhalung in Shi Yomi district. Besides, the Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister also laid the foundation stone for SEH MHS (2X250) KW.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has has lauded Arunachal Pradesh’s ongoing endeavour to set up 50 standalone mini and micro hydel power projects in the villages bordering China in a bid to provide uninterrupted power supply to villagers as well as the Army guarding the LAC.

In response to a tweet by Arunachal Pradesh CM Pema Khandu, who posted pictures of one of the hydel projects at Mago village in Tawang district and in his home constituency, Mukto, Prime Minister Modi tweeted, “A welcome development in the border areas, which will empower those living in border villages.”

It may be mentioned, that Khandu in his tweet had said, “Golden Jubilee Border Illumination Program is in sync with the vision of Hon PM Shri @narendramodi ji that border villages aren’t the last but first to be transformed. Mago village in my Mukto assembly constituency is witnessing a new dawn. As many as 50 stand-alone mini and micro hydel projects will be developed near the international border with an estimated cost of Rs 200 crore, ensuring 24×7 power supply to villagers and border guarding forces.”

Worth mentioning, the Centre is reportedly planning a hydropower project on the strategically important Siang River in Arunachal Pradesh of 11,000 MW capacity. Sources said that the stateowned NHPC Ltd has submitted a prefeasibility report for the Upper Siang Multipurpose Storage project.

The project, spearheaded by the ministry of jal shakti, will aim at live storage of 9 billion cubic meters of water. The report on the project has been sent to the Central Electricity Authority for approval
A study by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) and individual power developers say that the total hydro power potential of Arunachal Pradesh is estimated at over 57,000 MW and the estimated potential for development of micro, mini and small hydel projects is around 1600 MW, which makes the state as the frontrunner in hydropower potential.
