A special court in Arunachal Pradesh’s Lepa-Rada district designated under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act sentenced a man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a minor girl.
The court convicted one Kyabin Sikom, a native of Sikarijo village in Upper Subansiri district, under Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO) Act for ‘aggravated penetrative sexual assault’ on the minor.
Officials said the incident happened on September 8, 2021, at Sikarijo, when Kyabin Sikom invited the victim and her sister, who happens to be his brother-in-law’s daughter to his home for a casual visit.
Sikom invited the victim and her sister to stay in his home that night because they were regular visitors and relatives.
The victim’s sister left after a while, but the minor girl stayed back. Sikom, who was drunk at the time, raped the minor when he found her alone.
After the victim’s family members got to know about the occurrence, an FIR was filed.
Sikom was charged under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 6 of the POCSO Act at the Daporijo police station.
The case was taken to the special court for trial after a charge sheet was filed, and Judge Tage Halley found Sikom guilty and sentenced him to 20 years in prison.
The court also ordered Sikom to pay a punishment of Rs 1,500 after he pleaded guilty to his crime.
