Arunachal Youth Cong’s 5-day deadline is violation of nation’s law: Arunachal Govt

The Arunachal Pradesh government on Tuesday said that the 5-day deadline set by Arunachal Pradesh Youth Congress for release of all those detained during the 72-hour shutdown call in Itanagar Capital region from May 10-12 is a clear violation of the law of the nation.

Speaking exclusively to Northeast Live, Itanagar Capital DC Talo Potom said, “Everything has a procedure. This 5-day ultimatum seeking release of the detainees is a demand which is violation of the law of the nation. It will be wrong to say that the Arunachal Pradesh Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (APUAPA) is erroneous. Every law has it’s own procedure and when someone does not abide by the norms than we take the name of extremists. This means that you want to violate the law of the nation.”

The Itanagar DC said that irrespective of an ultimatum or not, necessary procedures are being followed for the release of the detainees. “We have received the petitions and steps are being taken as per the rules and regulations of the APUAPA. We have sent all the things (records) necessary to the Home department. The Home department is seeking reply from us, the SP and accordingly we are sending our replies. So the process is on.”

The Itanagar DC informed that an invite has been sent to the Arunachal Pradesh Youth Congress (APYC) for talks.

Worth mentioning here that, APYC President Tarh Johny had sent a letter to Arunachal Pradesh Home minister Bamang Felix demanding immediate unconditional release of all those detained, failing which the APYC would launch mass agitation against the Arunachal government.

Earlier, on May 18 the jail term of all the 44 people arrested during the 3-day Itanagar Bandh in Arunachal Pradesh from May 10-12 was extended up to 30 (thirty) days from the date of their arrests.

The arrested people were supposed to be released on May 21 after the completion of their 12-day judicial custody, however, they will now have to serve another 18-day jail term, Itanagar DC Talo Potom had said.

Activist Sol Dodum, Tana Tamar Tara, Aam Admi Party worker, Taw Pail, Chairman of Pro Dam Movement, 4 social influencers – Nabam Sanjay, Yowa Bosco, Viral Rabha, Yowa Topu were among those arrested by police from across the state during the bandh to prevent any untoward incident.
