Army Chief to visit violence-hit Manipur today

As the situation still remains volatile in Manipur, Army Chief Manoj Pande will visit the trouble torn state today. The Army chief will be reviewing the security situation during his visit and take stock of the preparedness of the forces in dealing with any eventuality.

According to reports, the Army Chief will be briefed by officials of the Eastern Command on the measures taken to bring the situation under control. The Amy Chief’s visit to Manipur comes amid Union minister of state for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai camping in the state in a bid to pacify the situation by holding talks with different stakeholders especially civil society organisations and ahead of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s three-day visit to the state from May 29 to June 1.

On the other hand, the Manipur government has extended the ban on Internet services by another 5 days till May 31.

The government in an order stated that the ban was issued to prevent any disturbances of peace and public order, with apprehensions of anti-social elements using social media for transmission of hate messages which might have serious repercussion for the law and order in the state.

It has been 24 days now since the government has suspended the internet services in the state. Internet broadband, Mobile data in Manipur were suspended ever since the violence broke out on May 3.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Friday once again made a fervent appeal to every section of the society in the state to abjure violence and embrace peace. As sporadic incidents of violence are refusing to die, Chief Minister N Biren Singh highlighted that issues which led to the current situation are “complicated” and can only be resolved through proper dialogues.
