The 5 villages have been awarded due recognition by the Ministry of Tourism
Known for its pristine natural beauty, the Northeast region is one of the most sought after destination not only for domestic but also international tourists. Blessed with rich flora and fauna, at least 5 villages from Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Sikkim have been adjudged as Best Tourism Village under gold, silver and bronze categories.
750 applications were received from 31 states which was shortlisted to 35 by the Ministry of Tourism.
Reiek village in Mizoram bagged the Award in the Gold category among the five best villages in the nation.
Arunachal Pradesh’s Shergaon and Meghalaya’s Kongthong, received the award in the silver and bronze category, respectively.
But what is so special about Reiek Village?
Reiek village is situated in Mizoram and features traditional huts representing different Mizo sub-tribes.
The Tourism Department of Mizoram has taken great care to create and maintain the houses, including those of the Mizo chieftain, a bachelor’s dormitory, and that of a widow. These houses are fully furnished, offering visitors a glimpse into the glorious history of the highlanders.Nearby, a few modern Mizo houses have been built to showcase the changes in Mizo lifestyles in line with modern developments.Moreover, the department has established a cafeteria and a resort that provides decent food and accommodation. Reiek village is also the venue for the annual Anthurium festival, which takes place in September, while April is considered the best time to visit this beautiful village.
Facts about Shergaon in Arunachal Pradesh:
It is located in West Kameng district, and is embraced for its pleasant climate and breathtaking landscapes. Surrounded by the Himalayas, the Shergaon Monastery, dating back to the 17th century, remains a primary attraction in the village. Other key attraction of Shergaon include the Sangti Valley, Bomdila Monastery, and the biodiverse Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary.
Know about India’s ‘Whistiling Village’:
Meghalaya’s ‘Whistling Village,’ Kongthong, has clinched the Bronze award in the Best Tourism Village category at an event organized by the Ministry of Tourism.
Besides its breathtaking beauty, Kongthong is known for its unique tradition where each villager is assigned a special tune at birth by their mothers, known as ‘Jingrwai Lawbei’ or ‘Mother’s Love Song.’ This tradition reflects the matrilineal culture and a mother’s enduring love for her children.
Sikkim’s Kitam village has also been recognised with the Best Tourism Village Award in the Bronze category.
Kitam village in Sikkim, known for its bird sanctuary and rich cultural heritage, boasting over 200 bird species and year-round bird watching.
Located on the Northern banks of the mighty Brahmaputra Assam’s Biswanath village was also adjudged as one of the Best Tourism Village in the Bronze category.
Biswanath district, Biswanath Ghat is also popularly known as “Gupta Kashi”. It is called Gupta Kashi, in comparison with Kashi during the golden rule of the Guptas. The site has a cluster of temples of different gods.
