Tripura Assembly’s Winter Session begins, Governor highlights state’s achievements and future goals

The Assembly observed a moment of silence for the demise of BJP MLA Surajit Datta and CPIM MLA Samsul Haque.
The winter session of the Tripura legislative assembly commenced on Friday, with Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu saying that 2023 has been a remarkable year for India. In his address, Nallu emphasized the state’s and India’s accomplishments, including its lunar mission, developmental initiatives, and the government’s commitment to transparency, inclusiveness and sustainable development.
He further outlined the state government’s strides in general administration, good governance, and the establishment of transformative institutions like the Tripura Institution for Transformation.
He praised the e-cabinet system for transparency and the digitization of government offices through the e-office system.
Highlighting the government’s priorities, the Governor outlined a focus on good governance initiatives, empowering local governance, skill development, employment generation, women empowerment, social welfare, infrastructure development and environmental conservation for holistic and sustainable development.
A significant portion of the Governor’s speech focused on the agriculture and agri-allied sectors which contributes 36 percent to Tripura’s GDP.
Initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana and ‘Ghar Ghar KCC Abhyan’ were highlighted, along with efforts to support horticultural produce marketing, procurement of paddy through Minimum Support Price and various social security schemes.
The Governor also mentioned future targets, including self-sufficiency in animal-derived food production, sports infrastructure development, improved medical education, last-mile health services, safety and security measures, addressing the drug menace and promoting the cultural aspects of the state.
In the tourism sector, Nallu announced plans for infrastructure development at major tourist destinations with the aid of Asian Development Bank funding. Adventure tourism initiatives, such as paramotoring, paragliding, water scooters, water skiing, zorbing, banana boating, and hot air balloons have already been introduced.

Following this Chief Minister Manik Saha, the Leader of the House, declared an increase in the MLA Development Fund from Rs. 50 lakh to Rs. 75 lakh from April, with the Opposition Leader Animesh Debbarma urging consideration for further increments to Rs one crore.
Later Speaker Biswabandhu Sen announced the adjourned of the House until Monday.
