Indian Railway Construction (IRCON) International Limited on Wednesday completed the tunnelling of tunnel No 13 of Sivok-Rangpo Rail Project
The Sivok-Rangpo Rail project that would connect Sikkim with West Bengal and the rest of the country by rail is going ahead at a fast pace. The project achieved another breakthrough on Wednesday as Indian Railway Construction (IRCON) International Limited, the company constructing the project, completed the tunnelling work of tunnel number 13, located in Kalimpong district in West Bengal.
The executing agency has completed the mining of the 2,560.5-metre long tunnel within two-and-half years.
With this, 8 tunnels of the 14 have been completed and the remaining six tunnels will be completed soon.
Mohinder Singh, Project Director of IRCON International Limited and other Northeast Frontier Railway officers, Detail Design Consultancy team of Amberg Engineering AG and senior officials of construction agency CS Dhorajia were present during the tunnel work completion.
The team said that the tunnel passes through seismically active and susceptible geological areas in the “Lesser Himalaya”, therefore, the most advanced technology – the New Austrian Tunnelling Method, has been used to counter poor geological conditions and to maintain safety.
The track laying work in the tunnels is going to start shortly, the officials said.
