Nina Singh from Bihar has been appointed as the first woman Director General of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) on Thursday.
She has been appointed to the post till her superannuation on July 31, 2024.
Who is Nina Singh?
Nina Singh hails from Bihar. She has studied at the Patna Women’s College and the Jawaharlal Nehru University.
She has obtained her Master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University.
She is a 1989 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from Rajasthan cadre and currently serving as Special DG in CISF.
After Sheel Vardhan Singh’s retirement in August 2023, she has been handling extra responsibilities as the head of the CISF.
Her achievements so far:
As the member secretary of the State Women’s Commission in 2000, she designed an outreach program where commission members went to districts to conduct hearings for women who faced difficulties.
Together with Nobel laureates Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo, she co-authored two research publications.
In 2005–2006, she also contributed to a Massachusetts Institute of Technology initiative aimed at improving the approachability of police stations.
Nina Singh is the first woman to lead the CISF and served as joint director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) from 2013 to 2018. During that period, She handled high-profile cases like the Sheena Bora murder case and the Jiah Khan suicide case.
In 2020, she was awarded the Ati Utkrisht Seva Medal for professional excellence.
Her husband, Rohit Kumar Singh, an IAS officer from the 1989 batch, is currently employed by the Central government as secretary of consumer affairs.
