In the wake of the much hue and cry following the publication of the final draft NRC in Assam, the Meghalaya government too is now contemplating on carrying out a similar kind of exercise in the state.

Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said that the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government is open to discuss the idea of adopting an NRC like exercise in the state and the matter has been referred to the political department.

Tynsong added that pressure groups as well as political parties have stressed on the need to have an NRC like exercise and the matter has been referred to the political department which will come up as a Cabinet memo in the cabinet which will be deliberated upon and then decided.

He further said that the government intends to strengthen an existing law like the Meghalaya Resident safety and security Act 2016 by adding more clauses to it instead of having too many mechanisms to deal with the problem of influx.

Earlier, the Deputy CM along with Home Minister James Sangma had a meeting with the Hynniewtrep Youth Council, who are demanding Inner Line Permit and NRC to check influx. HYC president Robert Kharjarin said that unless the government implements it they will continue to agitate.
