A student of the Bodoland University in Assam’s Kokrajhar district died in the wee hours today allegedly because doctors on duty were nowhere to be found resulting in loss of some crucial hours and by the time the doctors attended on the student, it was too late.
The student, Rami Kashyap Basumtary, a resident of Dhupdhara in Goalpara district, was rushed to the Rupnath Brahma Civil Hospital in Kokrajhar after Rami and two others met with an accident last night.
Rami Kashyap Basumtary along with his two friends were traveling in a two-wheeler, when they met with an accident at Titaguri area at around 12:30 am.
One of the pillion riders alleged that they rushed to the Rupnath Brahma Civil Hospital at around 1.30 am but there were no doctors available until 2.30 a.m.
He stated that Rami Basumtary required immediate treatment, but because he failed to get it on time, he succumbed to his injuries.
He also claimed that at first, they did not even receive a bed and blanket for Basumatary.
Outraged by the hospital’s extreme carelessness and misconduct, which resulted in Basumatary’s death, the Bodoland University Student’s Union has demanded immediate suspension of the doctor who was on duty.
Local MLA Lawrence Islary, Kabita Kalita ADC Kokrajhar, joint director A Sharma and BU students union members have also visited the hospital and directed the hospital authorities to submit a report within 24 hours.
ADC Kokrajhar has also ordered magisterial enquiry into the incident.
