Meghalaya’s Cabinet Minister and United Democratic Party (UDP) leader, Kyrmen Shylla, has announced that two public representatives from East Jaintia Hills will organize a consultative meeting to look into the opinion of the local population regarding the government’s proposal to introduce railway lines in the district.
Shylla emphasized that while not everyone is in favour of the railway lines in East Jaintia Hills, there is also no universal opposition to the idea.
Speaking to Northeast Live, UDP leader, Kyrmen Shylla, said “When it comes to railways, as of now, we have not reached the final stage. We are still in the process of raising awareness and understanding the benefits and potential outcomes of this railway project.”
Shylla added that a decision on whether to accept or reject the railway is pending and it is essential to understand the mindset of the people in East Jaintia Hills.
Highlighting the need for a comprehensive understanding of public sentiment, Shylla stated, “Our responsibility should be to gather information from the people, whether they are in favour or against it. This information will be presented to the Chief Minister, and the government will decide the way forward.”
Shylla stressed the importance of a large meeting where the residents of East Jaintia Hills can express their views on the introduction of railways in the state.
He asserted, “If the majority is against it, we are with the public; if the majority is for it, we are for it.”
The date and time for the meeting are yet to be scheduled, with plans to convene it in the early part of next year.
